JSU women's track finishes third at Gem of the Hills Invitational The Chanticleer Saturday, April 3, the Jacksonville State University track team held its fifth annual Gem of The Hills Invitational Meet at the JSU track. On a day that started out cloudy and rainy, it later turned out to be a perfect day to be outside. This event was more than just a track meet.

I would love to see them flourish into a Division I-AA powerhouse in every sport and then move up to be a contender in Division I-A, where the big boys play.

"Last Night" Opens at JSU The Chanticleer Thursday, April 8th, Jacksonville State University Drama Department will premiere "The Last Night of Ballyhoo" at Ernest Stone performing arts center. The play is being directed by senior Adam Fulmer. This will be Adam's directorial debut, as well as his senior practicum.

"Little Tree" to hold 5k run fundraiser The Chanticleer On March 27 the Little Tree will be hosting a benefit 5K walk/run and a mini-trot to raise funds for the organization at Henry Farm Park Jacksonville. The little tree is a branch of The Learning Tree, a non-profit institute that has provided educational and residential services to children with developmental disabilities since 1983.

JSU art major to paint work live The Chanticleer Lee Law, a graphic design major Jacksonville State University, will be bringing his art to the public by doing a live painting on March 13 at the JP Morgan art gallery in the Quintard Mall. The event will consist of Law painting live on a 20 ft by 10ft canvas that will be made up of smaller 2ft by 2ft canvases.

Get to know Laura Lundy The Chanticleer A student-athlete, an actress, and a piano player are just a few of the attributes Laura Lundy embodies. She is a senior tennis player at Jacksonville State University and will be graduating this spring with a degree in drama and a minor in English. Lundy was born and raised in the "Skydiving Capital of the South," also known as Cedartown, Ga.

GEM upgrade begins Feb. 3 The Chanticleer Students will experience the complete transition of the JSU e-mail system to a new interface by the late hours of February 3. The system that has been switched already for faculty and staff accounts, is to replace GEM; a platform already categorized as "an aging old system" by the Information Technology department.

Helping Haiti The Chanticleer As relief streams into the island nation of Haiti following a series of devastating earthquakes on January 12, the Student Government Association is stepping up to offer an opportunity for Jacksonville State University students to help. The SGA began collecting donations from students last week at the basketball game against Tennessee State and will continue collecting donations until February 28.

JSU Peer Educators target student smoking The Chanticleer On Wednesday January 25, the Jacksonville State University Peer Educators, alongside the Calhoun County Health Department, hosted the Tobacco Awareness Day in the Theron Montgomery Building. The purpose of the event was to raise student awareness and educate them about the harmful effects of tobacco and marijuana use, as well as offering information on how to quit smoking.

WLJS finds big names, more students The Chanticleer Jacksonville State University's radio station, WLJS 92J, is growing. While the growth may not be obvious to new listeners, long time listeners to WLJS have noticed an obvious growth over the past few semesters. The radio station's growth is attributed to the new requirement in the Communication Department, a media workshop.

Ice, ice baby The Chanticleer The people of Jacksonville have experienced some harsh weather conditions over the past week and a half. Temperatures have dropped below freezing consecutively for many nights in a row and barely rose above freezing during the day. Residents of Jacksonville even saw snow for most of the day on January 7th.

Get to know Kelsey Johnikin The Chanticleer Kelsey Johnikin is a senior guard for the Jacksonville State University women's basketball team. She hails from Sioux City, Iowa, and came to JSU for change in climate. "I didn't want to see snow," said Johnikin. "I didn't want to even be in a state that touched Iowa, and I also felt like the coaches really wanted me here.

The man that keeps 'em running The Chanticleer All athletes face the reality of being injured every time they step on a playing field or enter a weight room. Athletic trainers are a vital part of an athlete's career by helping them recover and avoid injury. At Jacksonville State University, our athletic program has been blessed with a man named Jim Skidmore.
