Girl dies after being swept away by flooding JackCentral FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — A 12-year-old girl died Tuesday after being swept away by floodwaters after heavy thunderstorms hit a section of northern Arizona scarred by a wildfire last month, authorities said. The floodwaters rushed through a pair of subdivisions north of Flagstaff, forcing dozens of residents to flee their homes. The water carried large boulders, ash and other debris through the communities, knocking down fences and creating a muddy mess. Coconino County sheriff’s officials said the girl — identified as Shaelyn Wilson — fell into a wash south of…

Wildfire forces evacuations in east Flagstaff JackCentral FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — A wildfire that broke out just east of downtown Flagstaff has prompted evacuations of nearby businesses and homes that might be in the fire’s patch. Flagstaff Fire Department spokeswoman Kimberly Ott says the blaze broke out at about 1:30 p.m. Saturday behind the Little America Hotel. It quickly worked its way up the hill and could threaten homes. It is mainly burning ponderosa pine trees. The hotel is located on Butler Avenue just east of Interstate 40. Fire crews have called for air drops and hand…

Why I am quitting The Lumberjack JackCentral You know how NBC has made so many stupid decisions, everybody just laughs it off and moves on? Oh, they’re gonna fire a talk show host but then give him a better time slot in front of another talk show, even though none of their sponsors wanted this and it was destined to doom everybody involved? Oh, that’s NBC for you. What, they’re running Olympic events on tape delay even though everyone is on the Internet and knows who won already? NBC! Hey, they’re turning their funniest show, “Parks and…

Skeptic Tank: Religious freedom for Muslims JackCentral As much as we would like to deny it, America is still a land of intolerance, hatred and bigotry. For all of our talk about all men (and women) being equal, minorities like the Muslim community still suffer from ignorance. There has been an explosion on the blogs about the proposed construction of a mosque in Manhattan near the site where the Twin Towers once stood. After taking some time to read through several blogs, I am disgusted by their comments. Conservative radio talk show host Michael Berry said…

250 homeless vets to get housing from HUD JackCentral PHOENIX (AP) — Homeless veterans in Phoenix, Tucson, Flagstaff and Bisbee will get permanent housing assistance under a federal program announced this week. The Housing and Urban Development agency says the 250 vouchers are worth $1.5 million and are part of a nationwide investment of $75 million to support homeless vets. HUD expects a second round of funding for another 1,355 rental vouchers next month, with 400 more coming this summer. Allocating the vouchers will be done by local housing agencies. UPDATE: Presler defeats Haughey to win reelection JackCentral After waiting six days longer than expected, incumbent Sara Presler has now been elected to a second term as Flagstaff mayor. According to the unofficial final results from the Coconino County Recorder’s Office, Presler defeated councilmember Joe Haughey by 217 votes, collecting 49.6 percent of the votes to Haughey’s 47.81 percent. “I felt really positive [during the delay],” Presler said. “I went right back to work the day after the election, and never took anything for granted.” Coconino County Record Candy Owens said the the delay occurred because of some…

2010 Summer Games Preview JackCentral For the final post of the semester, I thought it would be appropriate to preview the games being released this summer. Summer typically marks a videogame drought, and is traditionally used for catching up on older games than for playing new ones. That’s not really the case this year. A handful of great new titles will ensure that those old games you haven’t gotten to yet will continue to collect dust in the back of your shelf.  Red Dead Redemption–Xbox 360, PS3–May 18–A lot of people have given this title…

NBA 2K10 Prediction: Phoenix Suns Win 2010 NBA Finals JackCentral As I write this, the Phoenix Suns just defeated San Antonio to take a 2-0 series lead in the second round of the 2010 NBA Playoffs. For those of you that aren’t familiar with the history, the fact that Phoenix is leading this series by two games—the most they have lead the Spurs by in a playoff series out of their last four meetings—is akin to Rocky getting knocked out by Apollo Creed, then getting knocked out again, then getting suspended from boxing, then getting technical K’Od, then finally exacting…

Faculty vote to condemn SB-1070 JackCentral On May 3, the NAU Faculty Senate voted on a resolution condemning Arizona’s Senate Bill 1070 (SB1070), the Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act, which gives police officers the authority to check the legality of somebody’s presence in the United States, and to arrest those who are not in the country legally. The resolution passed nearly a week after the Flagstaff City Council unanimously voted to fight the law. The resolution reads: “The NAU Faculty Senate condemns,  in no uncertain terms, the actions of the Arizona State Legislature and…

Unanimous support for city council action against state’s SB1070 JackCentral The Flagstaff city council is deciding to pursue legal action as a result of the recent SB170 immigration bill signed into law. The council held a public discussion in which citizens expressed unanimous support to file an injunction against the state. Speakers voiced concern that the bill creates a precedence that violates civil and human rights. Scott Overton was the only council member absent from the meeting. No person in attendance spoke in favor of SB1070. Councilmember Coral Evans stated the law is unconstitutional. She referenced the Preamble, which guarantees…

Indian food at affordable cost offered at Delhi Palace JackCentral I cannot tell you how many times I have been in the Woodlands Village shopping area and glanced over the sign that says, “Delhi Palace Cuisine of India” in the three years I’ve lived in Flagstaff. After I decided to give the Delhi Palace a try, I was a little concerned, due to its outside appearance, that the restaurant inside would be small. When I walked in, I was surprised to find the dining area was spacious, giving the place a welcoming feel. Within my first 30 seconds in…

Death of Next-Gen: The Case Against PS4, Xbox 720, and Wii 2 JackCentral For whatever reason, I often find myself thinking about the next generation of consoles. I consider new designs of the systems, unique control schemes, capabilities, and names (I’ve decided on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Wii 2, and the Sex-Box Three-Sexy. Or Xbox 720). People ask me why I don’t have things to better occupy my time, but then I tell them I am a videogame columnist and they leave me alone. Sometimes they give me loose change. As time goes on, however, I find myself thinking about future consoles less and…

Buy it, Rent it or Skip it: “Uncross the Stars” JackCentral Daniel Gillies stars as Troy, a man who must recover from the death of his wife by fixing his aunt’s porch, in the independent film Uncross the Stars. Troy’s Aunt Hilda (Barbara Hershey), who works at a retirement community, helps him with the struggles of losing a loved one, while Bobby (Ron Perlman) helps him figure out the difference between “love at first sight” and “true love.” Director Kenny Golde fails to create an original movie due to the predictable plot twists and the rather boring, dull characters. Writer Ted…

Attack Of The Clones: Why A Dearth Of Originality Is Hindering The Gaming Industry JackCentral Grand Theft Auto was a significant milestone for the gaming industry. It single handedly brought mature gaming into the forefront, and revolutionized a genre with its sandbox-style gameplay, giving the player an open world for them to play around with in whatever way they wished. However, while the game brought the industry a step forward, it simultaneously buried it in a ditch of stagnancy for the next decade. Observing the success of the “Sandbox Model” of gameplay, developers began imitating it in all their titles. Suddenly, nine out of 10…

Rio De Flag flood project sparks controversy JackCentral The $60-85 million Rio de Flag Flood Control Project that will divert the course of the Rio de Flag could prevent a severe flood from hitting Flagstaff and leaving parts of the city under up to six feet of water and inaccessible for days. The city approved the project — which has already cost Flagstaff $10 million — but is continuing to pursue additional funding options and looking for ways to save money. The federal government has already spent $11 million and will pay for 65 percent of the project.…
