In Brief Gamer: Pratt’s career-night not enough to snap Lady Jacks’ losing streak JackCentral The NAU women’s basketball battled back from a 12-point halftime deficit but could not complete the comeback as they fell 68-64 to Montana State tonight at the Walkup Skydome. After the Lumberjacks held a five-point advantage early in the first half, the two teams jostled for the lead before the Bobcats used a 16-4 run to close the half and enter the intermission up by a dozen. But down 17 two minutes into the second half, the Lady Jacks awoke and cut their deficit to two points on three occasions.…

In Brief Gamer: Lumberjacks downed by Montana in first round JackCentral Going in as the No. 5 seed in the Big Sky Conference tournament, the NAU men’s basketball team could not pull off the upset, falling to the No. 4 Montana Grizzlies 81-60 at Dahlberg Arena in Missoula, Mont. Junior guard Cameron Jones scored 21 points, passing the 1,000 point mark for his career while senior forward Nick Larson, playing in what turned out to be his final game, added 11 points. The Lumberjack bench only mustered a total of 18 points led by junior forward DeAngelo Jones’ nine points. For…

(AP) — The Navajo Nation plans to break ground this fall on a $180 million resort, spa and casino near Twin Arrows east of Flagstaff. In Brief Gamer: Women’s basketball blows second half lead to Grizzlies in defeat JackCentral The NAU women’s basketball team has traditionally been on the short end against Montana (UM), as the Grizzlies own a 42-9 lead in the series history. Tonight was no different as the Lady Jacks dropped their eighth straight game of the season in a 72-66 loss, despite being up by seven with twelve and a half minutes to go in the game. The Grizzlies jumped out to a quick 10-2 lead in the game’s first three minutes and held a 13-point advantage halfway through the first half. But the Jacks…

Press Start: The “Games As Art” Debate JackCentral Videogames have grown up. Once a niche technology focused on high scores and competition and defined solely by its gameplay, the medium has evolved into a thematic vehicle that utilizes storytelling, audio and visual ambiance. Games now provide their audiences with a truly unique form of media by blending storytelling with interactivity. However, despite this growth and progression, the true nature of games is still fervently debated. The biggest debate regarding this issue is whether games can be considered a “higher art.” Even Roger Ebert has voiced his opinion on…

Students frustrated by overcrowded shuttles JackCentral The NAU transportation system shuttles an average of 5,000 students around campus daily. Whether it is the occasional extremely long waits for buses or vans, or the rather uncomfortable ride with students crammed backpack-to-backpack, traveling on the NAU buses has led to complaints by many students. “It’s a hassle, if you have an oddly timed class you’ll more than likely be waiting for forever for a bus to come,” said Sierra Roath, a sophomore special education major. “The only reason I take the bus is because I can’t park on…

At The Movies: Oscar picks JackCentral It’s that time of year again, dear reader. 2009 is over, the nominations are in, and Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin will co-host. Oh giggidy, it’s the 2010 Academy Awards. The list of Best Picture nominees has been expanded from five to 10, but the competition is no more intense. And while the race between Avatar and The Hurt Locker is certainly close, I have a feeling my predictions here will hold water come March 7. Best Picture: Avatar, because it’s the most important movie of 2009. Sure, the story…

Despite plenty of points, Lady Jacks lose seventh straight JackCentral The Phoenix Suns last trained in Flagstaff in 2004. But on a night when records were broken, fans may have thought they were witnessing Steve Nash and company as the NAU women’s basketball team dropped its seventh straight game in a 104-98 loss to Sacramento State (CSU) Feb. 25 at the Walkup Skydome. The teams’ combined total of 202 points accomplished two milestones: most points in a Skydome game and the second-most points scored by two teams in program history. The total was one point off the record set in…

Listen Up: “Plastic Beach” by the Gorillaz JackCentral Is there a point in time a band wears out its relevancy? Would Nirvana still be making music today’s youth would find rebellious? Can a band still creatively move forward without alienating its fanbase? The new Gorillaz album, Plastic Beach, will be released March 9. Its first single, “Stylo,” focuses on guest vocals provided by Mos Def and Bobby Womack, which is a trend throughout the album, with appearances by Snoop Dogg and members of The Clash. For a band to expand creatively, they have to learn from what they’ve done,…

The group, founded by brothers Jon and Tim Foreman, boasts two gold records since its debut in 1996. The Lumberjack asked singer/guitarist Jon Foreman a few questions about Switchfoot’s recent release while he was between tour dates in Texas prior to the band’s stop at Ardrey Auditorium March 4. The Lumberjack: Starting out as Chin Up, Switchfoot has come a long way since your Legend of Chin debut album of

You can’t escape death, taxes and NAU’s sneaky fees JackCentral We’ve all heard the argument that we’re paying for facilities and services we won’t be able to take part in, because by the time they’re finished or fully instated, we’ll have graduated. And new, more expensive fees seem to keep popping up everywhere on our LOUIE accounts. And we’ve all heard students who find all the charges to be a gratuitous and unnecessary hardship. Every time a new fee is approved, there is a resounding cry from students, asking, “We voted for this? When was that?” So the question is:…

Sound Check: Artist: Alkaline Trio JackCentral Alkaline Trio’s new album, This Addiction, gets the job done if you just want some angsty, late ‘90s, Good Charlotte-esque tunes to listen to while you work out. But This Addiction should not be considered particularly special. The first three tracks on the album — “This Addiction,” “Dine, Dine My Darling,” and “Lead Poisoning” — are so similar they could very well be the same song. Cliché punk lyrics pervade this album, with smoking guns, heroin, pools of blood and last suppers to express what I’m sure is a unique…
