University of Washington-Seattle Campus UW men continue hot play with two road wins 3/8/2010 -- Source: The Daily of the University of Washington - Latest News Athletics can often be categorized as a roller-coaster ride. But for the Washington men’s tennis team, who have only dropped one match thus far, this season has been a smooth ride, The Huskies knocked off both No. 54 New Mexico and No. 46 Minnesota this weekend, moving to 13-1 for the season. Washington overpowered Minnesota 6-1 on Sunday and the win marks the second-best start under head coach Matt Anger. “This was a very tough match, without a doubt,” Anger told GoHuskies.com. “The final score is misleading, as it was a very close match. Minnesota is a very tough team anywhere, so it’s a thrill for us to get the win back here in Minneapolis.” Junior Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan clinched the win for Washington, with a 6-3, 7-6 (3) win over 77th-ranked Sebastian Gallego at No. 1 singles. The win is his fifth victory over a ranked singles player. Nedunchezhiyan – ranked No. 56 – did not lose focus after dominating New Mexico’s Carl Ho on Saturday, 6-1, 6-1. Sunday’s match was also another stepping stone for freshman Kyle McMorrow, who also got a ranked win, knocking off 111th-ranked Tobias Wernet. McMorrow has now won five straight and is 15-3 overall this year. In a match closer than the final score indicated, Washington did encounter resistance at No. 5 singles, where junior Tobi Obenaus dropped his second dual match of the season, 4-6, 7-5 (10-6). Interestingly enough, in Sunday’s win over Minnesota, the Huskies did not sweep the doubles point. Senior Derek Drabble and Kildahl won 8-3 at No. 2 doubles, and Obenaus and junior Alex Rosinski claimed an 8-3 victory at No. 3 singles, but Nedunchezhiyan and McMorrow lost for just the second time in 12 matches at No. 1 doubles, falling to Gallego and Phillip Arndt. On Saturday, the Huskies downed the Lobos, 5-2. Washington used its usual formula of starting strong and not letting up, sweeping the doubles point and taking four of six singles matches. New Mexico’s points came in three-set games. Junior Martin Kildahl fell to Jadon Phillips at third singles, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, and junior Brad Bator could not overcome Joe Wood at No. 5 singles, falling in a third-set super tiebreak. Washington’s next match comes Friday at home against Eastern Washington at 2 p.m. It will be the first home match played outdoors at the Quillian Courts. Purdue University-Calumet Campus Is it asking that much? 3/8/2010 -- Source: PUC Chronicle Why is recycling so hard for some people? Not just recycling but also, to follow the cliché, reducing and reusing. In all seriousness it is not asking much. Energy efficiency and "going green" are fairly big topics in our society, compact fluorescent light bulbs (those spirally light bulbs that save energy) and hybrid cars are gaining popularity, yet so many people won't put forth the effort to just recycle.
Stephen F Austin State University Abstinence programs disingenuous to reality 3/8/2010 -- Source: Pine Log Sex education in public schools is always a highly debated issue. Having graduated from a Texas public school, myself and students at my former high school were taught about abstinence alone. I remember every year around the same time a group would come in and talk about why abstinence is important.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology MIT Quidditch: The Best Thing EVER? 3/7/2010 -- Source: MIT Admissions | All Authors Today. I. Joined. Quidditch. The awesomeness is still sinking in. This afternoon was the first warm, sunny, beautiful day we've had here for a while. I bike year-round, but today was the first time since fall that I went on a bike ride for fun, instead of just to get to class. After exploring the Minuteman trail (including a statue of Uncle Sam; did you know that the original Uncle Sam was born near Boston?) I headed to MIT's campus to take some pictures of MIT"s newest sport. I started out as an observer, but soon got caught up in the magic and was flying (er, running) around a soccer field on a broom. Today's practice was mostly about getting used to moving on the broom and handling the ball with just one hand (since the other holds on to the broom). We used a volleyball as our quaffle. We haven't practiced with them yet, but we have dodgeballs for bludgers. We also have a cross country running who has volunteered to dress in gold and play the snitch. The snitch is allowed to run around the entire campus, instead of staying on (or even in sight of!) the playing field. If you check online, you can find some pretty funny videos of existing Quidditch teams and their snitches. Some of the snitches will do flips and cartwheels to taunt the players as they run past. One thing that surprised me about practice was the wide range of students who came. Out of 11 students present, I think we represented 10 different dorms/Independent Living Groups. It was great to meet people from all over campus with a common interest. Another surprising thing about practice today was the spectators. Given that the sport is brand-new, I expected the stands to be empty. There were some people at MIT (I think there was a swimming tournament?) who noticed us practicing and stopped to watch and cheer. I gave them my camera and it is thanks to them that you have the three action photos! To MIT students: We have practices weekly, on Sunday afternoons. Sometime this month we will scrimmage Harvard. Several other schools are interested in playing us as well. Email quidditch-execs at mit dot edu to get on the list for more info! We would love more players and/or more fans :) To pre-frosh: We will have a CPW event! I am pretty sure it will involve us playing a demo game, and you will likely have a chance to play as well! Today. Was. Awesome.
